This week I reached out for a Turkey and Bacon Melt Wrap, part of the new Atkins-Friendly menu at Subway. Woo-hoo! All aboard the low-carbohydrate express, which is jammed with upward of 30 million Americans doing the Atkins or South Beach diet in some form or fashion. And Subway is fueling the train, becoming the first fast-food chain to hitch an official thumbs-up from Atkins Nutritionals Inc. Between low-fat and low-carb diet crazes, it's hard to find a plain old greasy sandwich, complete with, duh, bread in the drive-through. Here's the blueprint: a 6-inch wrap stuffed with sliced turkey breast, bacon, red onions, green peppers, olives, shredded Monterey Cheddar cheese and chipotle Southwest sauce. Total calories: 430. Fat grams: 25. Dietary fiber: 12. Manufacturer's suggested retail price: $3.99 (may vary). But more important: only 11 net grams of carbohydrates, which fits safely within Atkins' daily boundaries. Subway also has an Atkins-Friendly Chicken Bacon Ranch Wrap with only eight grams of carbohydrates. A regular sandwich at Subway is loaded with 50-plus grams of carbohydrates, off the charts for carb counters. The big breakthrough with this wrap is the wrap itself. Bottom line: If it doesn't deliver flavor, it could have zero carbs and it wouldn't make a difference. Your diet wouldn't last as long as Britney Spears' marriage. The low-carb tortilla passes the test. It's a little stickier and moister than a regular flour tortilla, but completely acceptable. If you lined up five brands of tortillas and sneaked in a Subway low-carb tortilla, I don't think a fast-food fan could pick the one that doesn't belong. The innards of the Turkey and Bacon Melt Wrap are standard-issue Subway fare. There's no funny business with the turkey, bacon and cheese. The sauce is a spicy mayonnaise concoction, which is naturally low in carbs. This wrap goes easy on veggies. You'll notice that Subway is holding the lettuce and tomatoes. And now the fine print: The Atkins-Friendly wraps don't scrimp on calories and fat. It packs all the calories of a fully dressed regular sub and, amazingly, FOUR TIMES the fat of a Jared-approved Subway sandwich. This is all about choice. With the addition of Atkins-Friendly wraps, Subway now has something for everybody in the carpool.
