How Tomato Juice May Aid In Weight Loss

The latest diet fad that everyone is talking about is not some rare Japanese fruit or Nigerian root – it’s plain old tomato juice. Most people may cringe at the idea of drinking tomato juice, unless it is in the version of a Bloody Mary. But people have known the benefits of tomatoes and its juice for generations – it has been used for everything from the common cold to pancreatic cancer. It may also help people lose weight. A recent study from China Medical University in Taiwan found that women who drank one nine-ounce glass of tomato juice per day for two months saw a considerable decrease in body fat and weight. The participants did nothing else to change their diets or exercise routines – they were simply told to drink the tomato juice as instructed. Some women who did not lose body fat still have improved overall health, with reductions in waist circumference and cholesterol levels. All of the women had increased lycopene levels, an antioxidant known to boost immune system function and reduce the risk of heart disease and certain cancers. Researchers were excited about their findings but must now find out if tomato juice could also help men reduce body fat levels. Since this study only involved women, there will need to be further studies conducted in order to determine efficacy on males. It is possible that the chemical makeup difference of men and women could mean different results, but if the results are similar in men it could lead to a mass demand for tomato juice. Until then, you may as well enjoy a glass of the red stuff every day – just in case it does work.

What can I use tomato juice for?

Fresh Use the juice to make Spanish or Mexican rice. Make gazpacho and add it to the soup. Throw it into a pot of meatballs or sausages that are simmering in sauce. Add some spices to it and drink it as tomato juice. Use it to make Tomato Herb Salad Dressing. Add it to meatloaf.

Sometimes when a recipe calls for canned tomatoes, the directions say to drain the liquid from the tomatoes before using them. The tomato juice that’s leftover is useful, and it gets wasted when poured right down the drain. What can be done with it? There are so many possibilities.

Fresh

Reserve the fresh juices in a non-plastic container (the tomato juice will stain plastic containers), refrigerate and use within a day or two.

Use the juice to make Spanish or Mexican rice.

Make gazpacho and add it to the soup.

Throw it into a pot of meatballs or sausages that are simmering in sauce.

Use it to make Tomato Herb Salad Dressing.

Frozen

If you’re not going to use the juice from the drained tomatoes in the next day or two, freeze the leftover juice in ice cube trays. Once it’s frozen, pop the cubes out and keep them in a freezer-safe container for use in a variety of ways.

Use them in place of regular ice cubes in a Bloody Mary.

Throw them in the pot along with beef or vegetable broth when making soups for added flavor. Add to the water when cooking pasta that will be topped with a tomato-based sauce. It will add more flavor to the end dish.

Throw them into the pot when you’re making veggie or beef stock.

Blend them in a smoothie or shake.

I am sure there are many other ways to use up leftover tomato juice that’s been drained from canned tomatoes. If you have any ideas, add them in the comments section, please.
