Natural Easter Egg Dye

Easter is around the corner and my kids love all the activities that go along with the holiday. Dying the Easter eggs is one of their favorite traditions. As a mom, I don’t love the store bought dyes that go along with this well loved ritual! I try to feed my kids a healthy and organic diet. And dyes containing harmful chemicals don’t go along with this philosophy. So, this year I set out to change our tradition. I decided to try my hand at natural easter egg dye by using fruit and vegetables. After all, some of the most beautiful colors are found within all the wonderful fruits and vegetables that are at our fingertips! I tested out various vegetables, fruits and drinks for this project. From frozen cherries to teas, it proved to be a fun experiment that my kids enjoyed as much as our usual egg dyeing activity! In case you missed my Easter Table check it out by clicking here!

Natural Easter Egg Dye Recipes

Here are our favorite ingredients to make your egg dye. The longer you let your hard boiled eggs sit in the natural dye, the richer the colors will be. You can place the jars with your eggs in the refrigerator overnight and see what colors you wake up to the next morning!

For each mixture, add 1 tablespoon of distilled white vinegar.

Use 1 cup of beet juice (from a can of beets)

Purplish Gray

Use 1 cup of frozen blueberries. Add 1 cup of water and let sit for 2 hours. Strain the liquid and add vinegar and pour into jar.

Or use 1 cup of concord grape juice.

Light Brown

Add 4-5 black variety tea bags to boiling water. Once cool, remove the tea bags and mix with vinegar.

Yellow

Add 2 tablespoons of ground tumeric to 1 cup of boiling water. Stir to dissolve. This creates a beautiful natural easter egg dye.

Orange

Combine 1 cup of carrot juice with vinegar.

Green

Combine 1 cup of fresh spinach juice with vinegar.

So, try out these natural easter egg dyes and let me know how it goes! I think next year we may try these same recipes but make some designs using leaves and flowers and an old stocking! If you liked how to dye easter eggs naturally, you may also like:
