In addition to helping to prevent tooth decay, using fluoride toothpaste also helps dieters avoid 'ketosis breath', which is a common symptom for those on the keto diet. Healthline revealed those on a low-carb, high-fat food plan end up raising their ketone levels, which breaks down fat and increases insulin.

Read More »It is drilled into us from a young age that sugar is bad for teeth, causing tooth decay when too much is consumed or good oral hygiene is not practised. However, this does not mean those on a sugar-free or a low-sugar diet can relax their teeth brushing routine, as it is still important to clean them twice a day regardless of sugar intake. The British Dental Association (BDA) has told the public that while there is less risk of tooth decay for those on a health kick and are following diets that include lower amounts of sugar, they should not neglect their oral hygiene. “In theory, there may be a reduced risk of tooth decay but good oral health also requires a balanced nutritious diet,” a spokesperson for the organisation told the Daily Mail. It was added: “The advice, regardless of this diet or any other, is to brush teeth twice a day, with a fluoride toothpaste, including last thing at night.” This comes after certain food trends, such as the Ketogenic (or keto) diet, have increased in popularity over the last few years, with a number of celebrities showing off the results of the restrictive plan. The keto diet involves cutting out grains, sugar, most fruit, and potatoes. It is a low-fat diet that favours foods with high fat content, which means dieters are encouraged to eat meat, leafy greens, full-fat dairy, nuts and seeds, avocadoes and berries, and fats like coconut oil instead. According to Professor Damien Walmsley for the BDA, people need to brush their teeth whatever their diet consists of. “Irrespective of what you eat, plaque is a sticky biofilm that develops on teeth as a result of the bacteria that naturally live in the mouth. It needs to be removed by regular tooth brushing, twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, or it will lead to gum disease,” he told the news provider. Despite this, many keto devotees believe those following the diet do not need to brush their teeth as often as they used to, asserting their opinions on social media. The diet is also getting a lot of attention in the press, thanks to its big celebrity following. According to Everyday Health, actresses Halle Berry and Gwyneth Paltrow, reality TV star Kourtney Kardashian, and Victoria’s Secret Angel Adriana Lima are just a few fans of the eating plan, using the low-carb diet to keep their figures trim. As celebrities are likely to advertise their health secrets on their social media pages, there is a concern that more people will adopt the keto diet and, subsequently, neglect to stay on top of their daily brushing regime. In addition to helping to prevent tooth decay, using fluoride toothpaste also helps dieters avoid ‘ketosis breath’, which is a common symptom for those on the keto diet. Healthline revealed those on a low-carb, high-fat food plan end up raising their ketone levels, which breaks down fat and increases insulin. At this point, the liver produces high numbers of ketones, causing your body to reach ketosis – and one of the side effects of this is bad breath, as ketone is forced to exit the body through your mouth and urine.
