On the outside, they appear to look healthy, but on the inside, their bodies tell a totally different story. And just because they’re not overweight doesn’t mean skinny people aren’t without their own health issues. In fact, if a recently released study is anything to go by, these people could be at an even bigger health risk than previously thought. A recently released study has revealed the hidden dangers of how people can still carry fat around their vital organs despite not appearing to be overweight at all. Researchers in the United Kingdom discovered that fat builds up around abdominal organs including the heart and kidneys. Called visceral fat, this can act a silent killer because people can have a lot of it despite appearing thin. Alarmingly, this type of fat is considered more dangerous than subcutaneous fat stored beneath the skin and stems from a different source altogether — a type of cell found in developing embryos. Dr. You-Ying Chau, from the University of Edinburgh and the lead author of the study in published in Nature Cell Biology, told The Independent that most bad fat comes from cells expressing the Wt1 gene in the later stages of pregnancy.

Subcutaneous fat has a different origin and doesn’t express the Wt1 gene.

“We also found that cells expressing Wt1 continue to act as a source of visceral fat into adulthood where they may be influenced by external factors such as diet,” Chau said. Speaking to Time Magazine, Dr. Daniel Neides, medical director at Cleveland Clinic’s Wellness Institute, said the dangers of being “skinny fat” were real and of huge concern.

“I see these people all the time,” he said.

“On the outside, they look incredibly healthy, but on the inside, they’re a wreck.” If people never eat vegetables, love meat, and haven’t exercised in years yet remain thin then they are probably what Neides calls “skinny fat.” Diets high in processed foods and sugar can cause visceral fat storage, so while people may not appear to have much fat on their bodies, the type they do have is the most dangerous kind. High levels of visceral fat can lead to high blood pressure and high blood sugar, which in turn increases the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. However, obesity still remains a major concern because it leads to health issues including cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes, some musculoskeletal conditions, and some cancers. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 70 percent of Americans over the age of 20 are either overweight or obese.
