Both tortillas and bread provide about the same amount of carbohydrates. If you are watching your carb intake, you won't shave a lot of carbs from your diet by opting for one over the other. However, calories vary drastically between different types of tortillas and bread. Other macronutrient components, including protein and fat, differ between each food and further increase the caloric composition.

Tortillas

Carbohydrates in tortillas vary slightly, depending on if you have a flour or corn tortilla. You get approximately 15 grams of carbohydrates from a medium 6-inch flour tortilla or 14 grams from a similar size corn tortilla. A medium 6-inch flour tortilla has a total of about 90 calories and nearly 70 percent of the calories come from carbohydrates. The same size corn tortilla provides less than 70 calories and about 85 percent of the calories come from carbohydrates. Total calories in flour tortillas are greater, since flour tortillas have more protein and fat.

Bread

One slice of white or whole-grain bread weighs about 1 ounce, which is the approximate weight of a 6-inch tortilla. Having a slice of white bread offers 14 grams of carbohydrates, roughly the same amount you get from a tortilla. Whole-grain bread has slightly fewer carbs, providing 12 grams of carbohydrates per slice. One slice of white bread contains 75 calories and around 75 percent of those calories come from carbohydrates. Having a slice of whole-grain bread instead offers the same amount of calories, but only 65 percent of the calories come from carbohydrates. The remaining calories in whole-grain bread come primarily from protein and a small amount come from fat.

Strive to meet your daily carbohydrate recommendation by having a healthy portion of tortillas, bread or other carb-rich foods. Carbohydrates are your body's main fuel source. After carbs deconstruct in your gut, they are converted into glucose and absorb directly into your bloodstream to power all cells. Your diet should consist of 45 to 65 percent carbohydrates, reports the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Because carbohydrates offer 4 calories per gram, you need 202 to 292 daily grams of carbs if you follow an 1,800-calorie diet.
