Acidosis is a condition where the body fluids and tissues contain too much acid and this condition is believed by so many nutritionist to be the benchmark of so many diseases and ailment. There are so many factors that can cause an increase in the body pH level, but the most common is our diet and this is why we should be very wary of what we consume. There are acidic foods and alkaline foods and like I have stated in previous blogs, the pH of a food is not really dependent on it prior to consumption but on its byproduct after metabolism and digestion by the body. This why certain ‘acidic’ foods like lemon, orange, apple cider vinegar are classified as alkalizing foods because they give an alkalizing effect upon metabolism.

Here are some examples of acidic and alkaline foods

Acidic Foods : All meat, Tomatoes, Rice, Oats, Bread, Popcorn, Soda, Carbonated drinks, Refined sugar, Fried foods, Table salts, pastas… Alkaline Foods: All vegetables, beans, garlic, all fruits except cranberries, blueberries, plums and prunes… This is definitely not a comprehensive list. It is just to give you an inkling on the point we are trying to buttress. So now, it is safe to say that over acidity in the body comes from consuming more acidic forming foods and less alkaline forming foods.

What happens in an acidic body?

For starters, the optimum pH of the human blood is 7.4 and that is slightly alkaline. This pH condition allows the body maintain a disease free environment and allows for optimum functioning. When the body is acidic, an imbalance is created. The body has a rhythmic system that allows it counteract this imbalance and this process is called pH buffering. One of the ways it does this is taking calcium, magnesium, potassium, and phosphorus (alkaline) from the bones, teeth, muscles and this result in a nutrient deficiency. This is why osteoporosis and arthritis can be traced to over acidity in the body. Apart from making the body susceptible to diseases, it also reduces energy production and the body’s ability to absorb vitamins and minerals. It also makes detoxification difficult (…and I’m sure we know the dangers of leaving those toxins in your body by now).

Enough talk on acidity of the body. How can we manage it with apple cider vinegar?

Fresh fruit juices and apple cider vinegar is very effective in treating mild cases of body acidity because of their alkalizing effect. Besides, they are natural and 100% organic so you need not fear. Beyond its alkalizing effect, apple cider vinegar is also a good source of magnesium, calcium and potassium which are usually depleted and deficient in an acidic body and very necessary in enzymatic functioning, heart health, immune heath and the rest.

Severe cases of acidosis is usually associated with symptoms like rapid breathing, confusion, shortness of breath, lethargy, kidney disease…If that seems to be the case for you, then please drop that apple cider vinegar and go and see a doctor immediately. Capiche?
