Eat More Bacon?

Here on the farm, we need NO excuses to eat more bacon…

Our bacon is so good that I have to limit the quantities of bacon that our family eats, because there would, quite literally, be none left for customers if I didn’t. I LOVE bacon. I mean, I love our bacon. It’s not like store bought bacon, and some folks don’t like it because, well, it’s just not the same. It’s not sliced super thin, it doesn’t crisp the same, and the flavor is cleaner (better in my opinion). There is no chemical after taste (you probably wouldn’t notice this if you’d never eaten pastured, forested or free range bacon!). We don’t need an excuse to eat more bacon. We want to do it.

But let’s face it, Bacon has an undeserved bad rap.

To help bacon to get past it’s bad reputation, I’ve made a list of all the good reasons to eat more bacon.

Ok – here goes:

10 Reasons you should eat more Bacon:

1 – Bacon helps stop food cravings!

Bacon’s high saturated fat content, alongwith protein, helps it to stop food cravings. This makes it a good food for weight loss. There are in fact studies that show that increasing your intake of fat while decreasing your intake of carbohydrates is more successful for long term weight loss. This is partly because fat fills you up faster than carbohydrates.

2 – Bacon raises HDL levels.

One of the most effective ways to raise your HDL levels is to increase consumption of saturated fat. And, since HDL is the good cholesterol, you want to keep your levels high. The higher your HDL, the lower your risk of heart disease. The saturated fat in bacon is ideal for this.

3 – Bacon is low in carbohydrates.

Carbohydrates raise insulin levels in the body and the higher insulin levels cause your body to store more fat.

There is no blood glucose or insulin spike after eating bacon.

4 – Bacon contains high quality protein, in significant quantities.

While bacon certainly does not have as much protein as steak, it’s a very complete protein containing some of the highest amounts of tryptophan, leucine and glutamine, essential amino acids which play important roles in brain and nervous system health and muscle building.

There are 13 grams of protein per 100 grams of bacon.

5 – Bacon is a great source of selenium.

Selenium is a potent antioxidant, and is vital for the health of your thyroid gland. Selenium is being recommended by doctors as a supplement for those with arthritis and heart disease.

100 grams of Bacon contains 93% of your RDA.

6 – Bacon has phosphorus.

Phosphorus combined with calcium forms calcium phosphate. Calcium phosphate contributes to bone and tooth strength and stiffness.

Phosphorus is also an important building block for your DNA.

Bacon provides 56% of your RDA of phosphorus.

7 – B Vitamins, Bacon has these too!

B vitamins help with conversion of carbohydrates (food) into glucose which the body then converts to energy. B vitamins also play critical roles in healthy skin, hair, eyes, liver, circulation and sexual health. 100 grams of bacon provides you with 16 % of your daily B2, 13% of your B5, 58% of your Niacin or B3, 17% of your B6 or Pyridoxine, and 22% of your B12!!!

Reason #7 alone justifies more bacon consumption…

8 – Choline. Yep, bacon’s got that too!!

Choline is great for your brain, improving memory and increasing learning speed. There is even some suggestion that it might help prevent Alzheimer’s Disease. Every 100 grams of bacon gives you 131 mg of choline (no RDA for choline).

9 – Bacon’s good with just about everything.

I might have to draw the line at chocolate covered bacon, but I’ve seen bacon jam! I fried up some bacon to put on home made potato soup just the other day. It’s great on salad, in sandwiches, on grits, with breakfast, lunch or dinner.

10 – Bacon is just plain delicious!

No need to expound on this point. I know vegetarians who make exceptions for bacon. I think that if you’ve read this far, you already know just how good bacon is.

11 – Finally, bacon also contains the following vitamins and minerals:

Potassium. Bacon contains up to 17% of the USDA recommended dose! Potassium regulates blood pressure and is an essential mineral.

Zinc 24% of your RDA

Magnesium 9% of your RDA

To conclude, I think that there really aren’t any good reasons not to eat bacon. I feel certain that the bacon used to evaluate the above was typical bacon available in the grocery store. Pastured, free range or forested pigs most certainly are the best source for the healthiest bacon. And, we’ve got you covered! You can find our free range uncured bacon here. And if you like Canadian Bacon, you can find that here.
