What is ketosis?

The Ketogenic (keto) diet is a low carbohydrate, high fat and moderate protein diet. This drastic reduction in carbohydrate intake, and replacing it with fat, puts the body in a metabolic state called ketosis. This then makes your body more efficient at burning fat for energy plus, in the liver fat is converted into ketones which can supply energy for the brain. All of this then causes weight loss and a reduction in blood sugar and insulin levels, which reduces the risk of diabetes, cancer, epilepsy and Alzheimer's disease. However, these benefits come from a 'clean' version of the diet and even then people have reported having flu like symptoms (aka keto flu) a few weeks into the diet. The diet can be very tough to follow. However, with some tips and tricks to help you get started the whole journey can seem less daunting and more achievable.

Does coffee break intermittent fasting?

Whether you're starting your day with a full breakfast, or you have limited time and need a grab and go one, a bulletproof coffee should be a staple to your morning. This is because it contains no carbohydrates, so it doesn’t ‘wake up’ your metabolism. Instead, your body remains in a fasted state (also known as ketosis). Many people enjoy bulletproof coffee for breakfast so they can fast for as long as possible.

Do you get fatter before losing weight?

You'd think that going on a strict diet and exercise regimen would help you drop pounds quickly, but most people actually gain weight at first. If this has happened to you, don't give up on your goals just yet.

You'd think that going on a strict diet and exercise regimen would help you drop pounds quickly, but most people actually gain weight at first. If this has happened to you, don’t give up on your goals just yet. Not only can certain types of exercise, like strength training, make you gain weight from added muscle, you could also be retaining water. But what about those cases when the weight gain is actually fat, not muscle or water? There are a couple of scenarios that could explain this. Athletes training for triathlon events and even new runners training for their first 5K may easily make the mistake of abusing the “carb-loading” concept. Eating too much pasta and bread will pack on the pounds, so if you’re carb-loading, make sure you know what you’re doing. Another common mistake exercisers make is overusing protein bars and drinks. The average protein bar easily packs 300 calories, which isn’t a problem unless you’re eating one right after your workout and then eating a meal on top of it all. Unless you’re burning thousands of calories every day in training, protein bars and calorie-rich protein shakes need to be a meal replacement, not a snack. When consumed correctly, these foods can help you to power up after your workouts and give you lasting energy.
