This is a cool tip to remove fishy (shrimp) smell

Have you ever bought Shrimp and when you start cleaning them they smell well they smell Fishy (Shrimpy smell)? Here's an easy hack to remove that shrimp smell or taste after its cooked. This is so simple and takes less than 5 minutes. I found this tip in a Chinese cookbook about 25 years ago. I do this every time we have Shrimp and it always works.

Check out our tasty Shrimp Taco recipe.

Check out how simple this is to do!!

Remove Shrimp Shells and devein Put Shrimp in bowl Sprinkle 1 teaspoon Salt on Shrimp Stir for one (1) minute Rinse under cold running water Put Shrimp back in bowl Sprinkle with 1 teaspoon Salt on Shrimp Stir Shrimp for one (1) minute Rinse Shrimp again Sprinkle with 1 teaspoon Salt on Shrimp Stir Shrimp for one (1) minute Move Shrimp to Colander Rinse really well under cold running water The Shrimp will not smell or taste Fishy. They will also not taste salty. I hope you enjoy this tip and find it as useful as I have for so many years.

Remove Shrimp Shells and de-vein

Put Shrimp into a bowl

Sprinkle 1 teaspoon Salt on Shrimp

Stir Shrimp for one (1) minute

Put Shrimp in colander

Rinse under cold Running Water

REPEAT steps 2 more times. When you finish the shrimp smell will be gone!

It works on Fish also!

If you try this on Fish. Just sprinkle one teaspoon of salt on the fish leave it for about 30 seconds than rinse. Do this for 3 times. But be gentle when handling the fish it can break apart. I found this does work well. We usually cook the fish the same day we buy it so it usually doesn't have the strong fish smell.

Do you clean shrimp with lemon?

Add about 4 drops of lemon juice to the water and using your fingers while the shrimp is in the bowl massage the shrimp in the salt water and lemon juice mixture to remove all residue. When finished rinse with cold water, drain water, pat dry with a paper towel and cook as desired.

I like this method because you are handling two jobs at once. You're cleaning the shrimp and defrosting/thawing as well. Directions for cleaning shell on deveined shrimp: Start by placing cold water into a large bowl filled with ice. Reason for the ice is to assure the water remains cold, because we're going to allow the shrimp to soak for about a total of 15 minutes. Add about 1/4 cup of salt to the water. Mix the salt into the water using a spoon until salt is dissolved.

Place the frozen shrimp into the salt water solution.

After about 10 minutes of the shrimp soaking and thawing in the salt water solution you can start by using your fingers to peel away the shells. When this process is finished and all shells are removed from the shrimp, throw away the water. Repeat the process, this time you can use less salt. Add about 4 drops of lemon juice to the water and using your fingers while the shrimp is in the bowl massage the shrimp in the salt water and lemon juice mixture to remove all residue. When finished rinse with cold water, drain water, pat dry with a paper towel and cook as desired.
