Community Email 4 Famous Eating Bets to Avoid Some challenges are best left unmet. Eating dares are as old as time. Heck, even the devil’s argument to Eve was basically, “I dare you to eat that apple.” Eating dares have come a long way since the Garden of Eden, but one constant remains—they typically aren’t smart. Here are four well-known (and decidedly unwise) gastronomic stunts. 1. The Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest The granddaddy of all eating contests began on July 4, 1916, at the now-famous spot in Coney Island, New York, when four immigrants had a “dog-off” to determine who was the most patriotic. The first winner downed 13 dogs and buns in 12 minutes. The 2011 winner, Joey “Jaws” Chestnut, ate 62 in 10 minutes. The 2011 winner, Joey “Jaws” Chestnut, ate 62 in 10 minutes. “Could I do this?” NO “It is not possible for an average person to eat that much,” says George Shea, the CEO of Major League Eating, the organization that oversees most professional-eating contests. It can take years of training to consume that much food. Interestingly, some of this training may involve reawakening a survival feature that most Homo sapiens had at one time. “In a way, competitive-eating contests might share similarities with something early humans probably had to do fairly often,” says Leonid Poretsky, MD, director of the Friedman Diabetes Institute at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York. When food was scarce, you’d gorge after a successful hunt, as the next meal might be five days away. We rarely need to stuff down a whole antelope nowadays, so — luckily — we’re out of practice. To eat just 12 or 15 hot dogs, you’ll need to distend your stomach. And that hurts. “Some people have more tolerance for that pain than others,” says Poretsky. If you trained regularly, you could increase your stomach volume and lessen the pain. But please don’t. First of all, glory won’t come easily. Even if you train hard enough to eventually eat 25 hot dogs in 10 minutes, you won't crack the top 10 at Nathan’s. You’ll have consumed 200 PointsPlus® values (8 for each hot dog and roll) to be known as “that dude blocking my view of Eater X.” Second, if you’re not young and healthy, you might do a face-plant during or after the contest. Gorging yourself can overstimulate your vagus nerve, slowing your heart rate and possibly causing you to faint, says Poretsky. In some people, a sharp rise in triglycerides (blood fat) can cause pancreatic problems. And due to all the fat in those wieners, they won’t be well digested — so you’d better have a clear path to the closest bathroom. "A lot of the same that went in will be going out," says Rebecca Mohning, RD, a Virginia-based sports nutritionist. “It is not possible for an average person to eat that much,” says George Shea, the CEO of Major League Eating, the organization that oversees most professional-eating contests. Re-creating this bet in your prison rec room will cost you 100 PointsPlus values (2 PointsPlus values per egg). And your cholesterol levels will skyrocket, says Mohning. Just one egg yolk contains your entire daily allotment. A two-egg omelet would make for a more enjoyable morning. The milk-gallon challenge An urban legend holds that it’s impossible to drink a gallon of whole milk in one hour. This was popularized on the MTV show Jackass, and none of the stars — who are regularly battered, punched, kicked, tattooed, and bitten by attack dogs — could do it. “Could I do this?”

PROBABLY NOT Odds are, you’ll vomit by the three-quarters mark. “Your stomach can hold about 5 cups,” says Mohning. That’s less than a third of a gallon. The fat in whole milk will also slow digestion, so the milk stays in your stomach longer. If you do drink the whole gallon — for 59 PointsPlus values — you’ll probably vomit during the next hour. The ol’ 96er In the 1988 flick, The Great Outdoors, the late, great John Candy eats a 96-ounce steak — never finished in the history of the restaurant — to win a free meal. “Could I do this?” PROBABLY NOT Plenty of steak places have these challenges. Eat a 72- or 92-ounce steak, and the meal is free. The owners know the average sucker who’d try this can’t handle the pain of eating more than 2 or 3 pounds of food, which isn’t even 50 ounces. If you somehow managed to eat 96 ounces of cow, you’d ingest 160 PointsPlus values (5 PointsPlus values for every 3 ounces). And you’d probably be a sweat-soaked mess before you hit the halfway mark. “You raise your thermal body temperature when you have to break down red meat,” says Mohning. “We call it the 'meat sweats.’” Better have the fish.
