Oprah Winfrey has made a bold statement: you can eat bread and still lose weight. But will that work for everyone?

The media mogul – who is a spokeswoman and part owner of Weight Watchers – sent the diet world into a frenzy on Tuesday after she tweeted out a promotional video for the weight loss company professing her love for the carb-filled food, and announcing she’s lost 26 lbs. “I love bread. I love bread,” Oprah, 61, says in the clip. “I now just manage it, so I don’t deny myself bread, I have bread every day.”

We reached out to a nutritionist for an explanation.

“Can you lose weight and still eat bread? Yes,” dietician Keri Glassman tells PEOPLE. But there are a few catches. RELATED VIDEO: Oprah Reveals How Much Weight She’s Lost on Weight Watchers since August “One slice of bread a day with no pasta, rice, potatoes or sweets is very different than one slice plus all of these other foods,” says the founder of the Nutrition School. “For most people, I would say one slice of a whole grain bread, with no added sugar, per day is okay when the majority of the diet is vegetables, lean protein and healthy fat.” The type of bread you eat is also a factor. Glassman is a fan of sprouted grain, while Winfrey reaches for the “grainiest, nuttiest seed bread, 7-grain, 9-grain, 12-grain bread I can find,” she says in another Weight Watchers video. Even the time of day you eat bread can have an effect on weight loss – but there are conflicting views on whether morning or night is best. According to David Letterman‘s doctor, Dr. Louis Aronne, you should eat carbs late in the meal and late in the day. “Having carbs first may stimulate appetite, and make it harder to control your eating,” says the director of Weill Cornell Medicine’s Comprehensive Weight Loss Center. According to his research, Aronne says people who ate carbs for breakfast ate 80 percent more than on a day they ate eggs. He recommends consuming carbs at the end of the day when they will have “a minimal effect on eating.” But Glassman finds it’s “easier to portion control and choose the right variety when bread is part of breakfast versus bread with dinner.” And Winfrey has found that satisfying her craving in the morning with an avocado, tomato, turkey toast (her “faaaaavorite” breakfast) works better for her. “I bask in the fact that I can have every single thing I want in one meal. There’s my crunchy 7-grain toast and I don’t crave it anymore during the day,” she says. “I don’t have to have bread anymore during the day because I have it in the morning, without fail. I just love it.”

How many carbs should I eat on a low carb day?

On low-carb days, you might eat . 5 grams of carbs for every pound of body weight. You may include a "no-carb" day, when you have fewer than 30 grams of carbs for the entire day. Another option is to follow a plan where you spend 3 days eating a low amount of carbs: about 100-125 grams each day.

What Is Carb Cycling?

Carb cycling is a very strict diet used by serious athletes and bodybuilders who want to drop body fat, get more muscle mass, or store more carbs for long-haul exercise like a marathon. It’s becoming more popular with people who want to kick-start weight loss, even though a lot of the weight you may lose would come from water. Your body needs carbs to work the way it should. Carbs, proteins, and fats are how it gets its energy, measured in calories. But 1 gram of carbs or proteins has only 4 calories, while 1 gram of fats has 9 calories. Experts generally recommend that you get 50% to 55% of your daily calories from carbs, 10% to 15% from proteins, and less than 30% from fats. Some carbs are healthier than others. They’re found naturally in dairy products and in plant-based foods like beans, grains, fruits, and vegetables. They’re also added to processed foods, as sugars or starches.
