Is it normal to poop once every two weeks?

"As long as it doesn't cause any discomfort or interfere with quality of life, it's perfectly fine to go once every two weeks. That doesn't make you a sicker person," she says. What's abnormal is any sudden change in your bowel movements that lasts for a couple weeks and has no explanation, Schnoll-Sussman says.

Everything from how our vagina smells to the presence of random patches of body hair raise the question: "Is this normal?" The need to confirm we're not alone pops up in every aspect of our lives, so it makes sense that we wonder most often about topics we don't readily discuss with our friends. If we talked openly about them, we'd know everyone else was in the same boat. When it comes to wondering about what’s taboo, bathroom habits are probably at the top of your list. From nutritionists’ advice on how much fiber to eat, to commercials about probiotic yogurts and laxatives, we often hear that age-old euphemism about staying “regular.” But what does “regular” actually mean? How much should you really be going? Maybe you poop every morning and night like clockwork. Or maybe you're someone who goes two, three days without a single bowel movement. The truth is, whatever is regular for you is “regular” in the technical sense. Whatever is normal for you is totally normal. Really. "There’s no such thing as a normal number or consistency of bowel movements a person should have," Felice Schnoll-Sussman, M.D., gastroenterologist and director of the Jay Monahan Center for Gastrointestinal Health at New York-Presbyterian and Weill Cornell Medicine, tells SELF. "All that there is is what is normal for an individual person. Every single person is different in regards to bowel movements." Linda A. Lee, M.D., clinical director of the division of gastroenterology and hepatology and director of the integrative medicine and digestive center at Johns Hopkins Medicine, notes there can be a wide range of what’s normal. "I’ve met people who go three times a day, and I’ve met those who go once every two weeks their entire lives and they’re fine," she says. Those who go infrequently may be worried that there's something wrong with them, but Lee says if you're not uncomfortable and that's how you've always been, there's no reason to be concerned. "As long as it doesn’t cause any discomfort or interfere with quality of life, it’s perfectly fine to go once every two weeks. That doesn’t make you a sicker person," she says.
