The U.S. Department of Agriculture reports that 72 percent of men and 64 percent of women in the U.S. are either overweight or obese, which is why many Americans have tried weight-loss diets. According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, reducing your energy intake by 500 to 1,000 calories per day can help you lose up to 2 pounds per week. Reduced-fat mozzarella cheese can be part of a healthy weight-loss diet, especially when used to replace whole-milk cheeses, added sugars or refined carbohydrates.

Background

Low-carb, high-protein, high-fat diets are often effective for weight loss, according to a 2007 study published in “Journal of the American Medical Association." Reduced-fat mozzarella cheese is included in this type of weight loss diet since it’s low in carbohydrates and high in protein and fat.

Reduced-Fat Mozzarella Nutrition

The amount of calories, protein and fat provided by reduced-fat mozzarella cheese depends on the brand you buy. Most varieties of reduced-fat mozzarella cheese contain between 65 and 70 calories, about 8 grams of protein and 3 to 4.5 grams of total fat per ounce. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, most effective weight-loss diets contain between 1,000 and 1,600 calories per day. As long as you don't overindulge in reduced-fat cheese, you can consume it as part of a reduced-calorie weight loss plan.

Regular Mozzarella vs. Reduced-Fat

Switching from regular mozzarella to reduced-fat mozzarella can help you cut calories for weight loss. Depending on the brand you buy, regular mozzarella may contain up to 25 additional calories per ounce. One ounce of regular mozzarella cheese contains about 80 to 90 calories, 6 to 7 grams of protein and 5 to 7 grams of total fat. However, all types of mozzarella cheese, even whole-milk mozzarella cheese varieties, are naturally lower in fat and calories compared to cheeses such as cheddar and Colby.
