What can I eat in place of fries on keto?

Rutabagas: Out of all the keto vegetables I tried, rutabagas are the winner. They hold their shape, get crispy edges when roasted, and taste really similar to sweet potato! Turnips were my second favorite, but they get a little wiggly. They don't hold that fry shape when you pick them up.

What Makes This Recipe Great

I’ve done it! I’ve found the perfect, crispy keto french fries! The carbs in regular french fries are just SO high and don’t go with the keto diet. My recipe for low-carb keto fries is made from the root vegetable rutabaga and tastes just like the real deal. I’ve seen so many recipes out there, and have tried and tried to find something similar to the delicious french fries we all know and love. But until now, low-carb fries like jicama fries, almond flour fries, coconut flour, etc., just haven’t hit the spot. Enter, the rutabaga! This root vegetable is pretty easy to find at local grocery stores and one serving of these delicious low-carb fries is just 93 calories and 5 grams of net carbs! Even better, pair your new beloved keto fries with one of these delicious 10 Keto Burger Recipe Ideas!

Ingredient Notes

Rutabagas: Out of all the keto vegetables I tried, rutabagas are the winner. They hold their shape, get crispy edges when roasted, and taste really similar to sweet potatoes. Turnips were my second favorite, but they get a little wiggly. They don’t hold that fry shape when you pick them up. But have a flavor more similar to regular potato fries. Avocado Oil & Salt: This is my go-to oil for these keto fries, but you could also use olive oil if you prefer. Salt them to taste.

Recipe Step by Step

I like to bake my keto french fries in the oven instead of deep frying them. To get my keto fries extra crispy, I love using this sheet pan with its wire rack over it. It allows the air to circulate all around and prevents the fries from getting soggy. Heat your oven to 425ºF with the oven rack in the middle. Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup. Set in a wire baking rack. Toss the rutabaga keto fries in avocado oil. Lay the fries in an even layer. Season with salt. Roast for 40-50 minutes until tender and getting crispy. Serve these keto fries warm with your favorite keto dipping sauce like ketchup or ranch!

Wire Rack: I find these keto fries turn out the crispiest when cooked on a wire rack, which allows the air to circulate around the french fry. If you don’t have an air fryer, you can cook them directly on the baking sheet. You may need to toss once or twice while roasting for even cooking. Air Fryer: You can make these keto fries in your air fryer, and cook them at 380ºF for 20-30 minutes. Carb Count: I’ve found tons of differing carb counts for rutabagas, but the most consistent was around 5-6 net carbs for medium rutabaga (about 1 cup worth). My Favorite Dips: What’s a french fry without a dip? These keto dipping sauces make these keto fries even more delicious (and that’s saying a lot!).

Recipe FAQs

How many carbs are in french fries? The amount of carbs in one serving of regular french fries is actually super shocking! Plus, if you add regular ketchup or dipping sauce, it’s even higher. For reference, if you order a small from a local fast-food restaurant, the carbs in french fries are about 48 grams! In a small serving of my keto french fries, there are just 5 net carbs! Do you have a recipe for any other types of keto fries? Yes! I actually really love these keto zucchini fries, but as I mentioned earlier, they feel more like a side dish or appetizer than a real french fry. But they are so good, and you will love them! What can I serve with my keto french fries? Omg, the options are endless! These keto fries pair so well with tons of dishes. My personal favorites: Perfect Keto Burgers, Keto Fish & Chips, and by themselves with my favorite Keto Ranch Dressing.
