Your body depends on protein for growth, development and proper functioning. Most men and women need between 46 and 56 grams of protein daily, depending on body type and activity level. Virtually all foods contain protein, however there are some foods that are almost 100 percent protein, with very little carbohydrate or fat. Incorporating these strictly protein foods within a balanced diet will help provide you with the nutrients your body needs to be healthy.

Meat, Poultry and Fish

Meat, poultry and fish are excellent sources of protein. Varieties with little to no fat, such as skinless chicken breast, deli style turkey breast or canned light tuna, are strictly protein foods. Generally, a 3-ounce portion of meat, poultry or fish contains approximately 21 grams of protein and 0 grams of carbohydrate. Fat content can vary depending on the animal source and cut, but if you desire pure protein without the fat, look for cuts labeled "loin" or "round" and choose white skinless poultry.

Eggs

One large egg contains just over 6 grams of protein. Whole eggs are not strictly protein, as they contain a significant amount of fat and cholesterol, but egg whites are virtually pure protein. An egg white contains 3.5 grams of protein, 0 grams of fat and cholesterol, 0 grams of carbohydrate and only 17 calories. If you are only interested in eating egg whites, it may be convenient to use a no-yolk egg substitute, which is made of egg whites and contains only 30 calories per quarter-cup.

Cheese

Like eggs, most types of cheese usually contain significant amounts of fat and cholesterol and, therefore, are not strictly protein foods. However, there are varieties of cheese that are naturally lower in fat and some manufacturers now make certain cheeses fat-free by using skim milk instead of whole milk. One ounce of fat-free cheddar cheese contains only 1 gram of carbohydrate, in addition to 7 grams of protein, making it essentially a strictly protein food.
