Giving up flour and sugar isn't easy, because these two ingredients find their way into many American processed foods. Whether you're trying to lose weight or simply to eat healthier, removing flour and sugar from your diet will take careful label reading as well as an avoidance of most processed foods. Eliminating these two items will remove many empty calories from your diet.

Finding Sugar

It's easy enough to avoid adding sugar to your breakfast cereal or coffee, but avoiding hidden sugar is more difficult. Even processed dishes such as microwavable dinners contain sugar; in fact, it's a safe bet that if it comes in a box, it contains some refined sugar. Sugar hides under different names in processed foods, including high-fructose corn syrup, the most commonly used sweetener in soft drinks. Beet sugar, sucrose, fructose, sorbitol, dextrose, maltose, mannitol, xylitol and turbinado all refer to sugars. If you're trying to avoid all carbohydrates in your diet, not just refined sugar, be aware that all fruits and vegetables contain some carbohydrate.

Finding Flour

Flour is found in obvious sources such as baked goods of all kinds, including bread, cakes, donuts and cookies. It's also the main ingredient in pasta, cereals, pizza dough, crackers and other snack foods. Flour is also used as a binder or thickener in foods such as gravy, stews, soups and other processed foods. French fries are often coated with flour; most breaded foods contain wheat flour as well. Even ice cream can contain flour as a binder. Lunch meat, salad dressings and spice mixtures can also contain flour.

Healthy Substitutes

If you eliminate wheat flour from your diet, gluten-free breads and rolls can serve as an adequate substitute for sandwich-making. Gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye, causes gastrointestinal symptoms in as many as one in 133 Americans. Much of the flour consumed in the United States is made from wheat, although rice, potato, soy and other flours are also available. If your goal is to eliminate all refined flours for reasons other than gluten intolerance, substitute whole-grain products. Replace high-sugar foods in your diet with vegetables and fruits as well as whole-grain products if your goal is simply to avoid refined sugars. If your goal is to avoid all carbohydrates, all grains, fruits and most vegetables will be off your dietary list. Snacking becomes more difficult, although nuts -- including peanut butter on low-carb vegetables such as celery -- avocados, eggs and cheese are low-carbohydrate snack alternatives.

Is Tito's vodka keto-friendly?

For keto-friendly drinking, nutritionists and dietitians recommend keeping it simple. Distilled spirits like vodka (we recommend Tito's), rum, whiskey, and gin don't have any carbs.

While following any diet can be hard, the super trendy ketogenic diet can be pretty restrictive, allowing you to only consume about 65 to 80% of daily calories from fat, 15 to 25% of calories from protein, and 5 to 15% of calories from carbohydrates. The low-carb, high-fat diet limits the types of food you can eat, like grains, cookies, and even certain fruits and veggies — and it also restricts what you can order at the bar. There's good news, though! You can drink alcohol while on the keto diet, but be mindful of sugary mixed drinks or heavy beers. Your best bet? Stick to alcohol sipped straight, on the rocks, or with a no-carb mixer. We spoke to three health experts to learn more about the do’s and don’ts of mixing alcohol into your keto diet.
