In addition to containing plenty of water to keep you hydrated, cucumbers are excellent sources of vitamins K, C and B1. According to Michigan State University, they're also comprised of lignans, which have been linked to a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and some types of cancers. Whether you're looking to stick with a diet plan, or simply provide your kids with a healthy after-school snack, you'll love these nutritious cucumber toppings.

Hummus

Hummus is made from chickpeas and is an excellent source of protein and fiber. WebMD reports that it has half the calories and a fifth of the fat that you find in mayonnaise, which makes it perfect for spreading over the top of your cucumber slices. Of course, you may also opt for one of the additional flavored hummus products, like roasted red pepper, artichoke spinach or carmelized onion with smoked paprika.

Greek Yogurt

Just like hummus, Greek yogurt has plenty of protein and a creamy texture that works well when paired with cucumbers. It's also filled with calcium and vitamin A. Simply spread plain Greek yogurt over individual cucumber slices or add flavor to the yogurt first using fresh dill, a drizzle of organic raw honey or chopped up pieces of fresh fruit.

Tuna Salad

Cut your cucumbers in half lengthwise and turn them into boats that can be filled with tuna salad. This healthy lunch eliminates the carbohydrates you'd get if you made a traditional sandwich with bread, yet adds protein and important omega-3 fatty acids. Instead of using mayonnaise to make the tuna salad, use mashed avocados. Avocados have over 20 vitamins and minerals, including fiber, vitamin K, copper and folate.

Sun-Dried Tomato Cream Cheese

While regular cream cheese is high in fat, you can purchase reduced-fat cream cheese to keep your snack healthy. Self Nutrition Data lists low-fat cream cheese as having plenty of calcium, phosphorus, potassium, selenium and vitamin A. If you blend sun-dried tomatoes into your reduced-fat cream cheese for added flavor, you'll also get folate, vitamin C, choline and vitamin K. Dip the cucumbers in the mixture or spread it evenly over a few slices.

What is healthier peeled or unpeeled cucumber?

Antioxidants are molecules that block oxidation, a chemical reaction that forms highly reactive atoms with unpaired electrons known as free radicals. The accumulation of these harmful free radicals can lead to several types of chronic illness ( 4 ). In fact, oxidative stress caused by free radicals has been associated with cancer and heart, lung and autoimmune disease ( 4 ). Fruits and vegetables, including cucumbers, are especially rich in beneficial antioxidants that may reduce the risk of these conditions. One study measured the antioxidant power of cucumber by supplementing 30 older adults with cucumber powder. At the end of the 30-day study, cucumber powder caused a significant increase in several markers of antioxidant activity and improved antioxidant status ( 5 ). However, it’s important to note that the cucumber powder used in this study likely contained a greater dose of antioxidants than you would consume in a typical serving of cucumber. Another test-tube study investigated the antioxidant properties of cucumbers and found that they contain flavonoids and tannins, which are two groups of compounds that are especially effective at blocking harmful free radicals ( 6 ).
