Honestly, the best part of the keto diet are the snacks. Sure, when you’re on the ketogenic diet—a meal plan that requires high-fat, moderate proteins, and limited carbs—you're supposedly meant to stray away from indulgent treats. Although debated, to ideally achieve ketosis, you’re only allotted 20-40 grams of carbs per day. You may be wondering what snacks can actually be good and light on the carbs. Where are chips and crackers? Where are the cookies? You might miss them at first, but then you'll realize that you can shovel baked cheese crisps hand over fist into your mouth, and you will quickly forget all about them. What other diet allows you to eat globs of peanut butter by the spoon and call that a snack? Or devour sizzling strips of bacon as a form of replenishing your body? Whatever the craving, sweet or savory, meaty or nutty, here are some go-to treats that are keto-friendly for when you’re having a snack attack.

Cheese Whisps For parmesan cheese crisps

150 calories per serving, 10 grams of fat, 1 gram of carbs, 13 grams of protein Every time I go to Costco, the store is always running low on bags of this salty snack—and with good reason. These keto-friendly baked cheese crisps are so delightfully crunchy and savory that it’s difficult to tear yourself away from the bag before downing it in one sitting. They come in several flavors now: there's parmesan cheese, cheddar, tangy ranch, barbecue, nacho, tomato basil, and a spicy asiago and pepper jack. The crisps are perfect for crumbling over a salad, crusting a protein, or lobbing into your mouth with reckless abandon. I also love to sprinkle them over tomato soup. It's the perfect alternative to a carb-y bag of potato chips.

Blue Diamond Almonds For roasted, salted almonds

170 calories per serving, 16 grams of fat, 5 grams of carbs, 6 grams of protein What is it about eating almonds as a snack that makes you feel suddenly healthier than you've ever been? Blue Diamond makes it easy with its range of flavored almonds. For the purists out there, there’s whole natural almonds. To satisfy a sweet tooth, try the honey roasted. My personal favorite is wasabi, which packs a spicy sinus-clearing punch, and there’s also salt and vinegar flavor—if you're into that sharp and tangy flavor. Whatever the craving, Blue Diamond almonds are low-carb and high-flavor, so it’s a win-win snacking situation. You can also incorporate Blue Diamond almonds to your meal by tossing a few into a salad or preparing a keto-friendly trail mix.

Rhythm Kale Chips For original flavor

130 calories, 10 grams of fat, 7 grams of carbs, 5 grams of protein These kale chips by Rhythm are “dried, never fried,” so they must be good for you. Top that off with the fact that these come in classic chip flavors, like “Kool Ranch” and “Zesty Nacho,” with no genetically modified ingredients, and you have yourself a winning snack. It’s not Doritos, but it’s as close to carb-friendly Doritos as you can get. And if kale isn't your favorite, Rhythm also has keto-friendly snacks made from cauliflower, broccoli, and more.

50 calories, 4 grams of fat, 1 gram of carbs, 2 grams of protein Laughing Cow cheese makes keto snacking so easy. The luscious, creamy triangles of cheese are already conveniently portioned out for you, and you can’t help but smile looking at their grinning cow mascot wearing cheese wheel earrings. Eat it straight up or spread some on other low-carb snacks, like jerky, veggie chips, or slices of cucumber.

Mauna Loa Macadamia Nuts For dry roasted with sea salt

200 calories, 21 grams of fat, 4 grams of carbs, 2 grams of protein Mauna Loa macadamia nuts are so buttery and creamy that it’s easy to forget you’re snacking on a bunch of nuts. These high-fat nuts pair perfectly with a keto diet and are said to reduce your risk of heart disease—which is just a small added bonus. The best part about Mauna Loa is that you can choose for a range of flavors; from Maui garlic and onion to honey roasted to original salted.

Dang Coconut Chips For original recipe

170 calories, 12 grams of fat, 14 grams of carbs, 1 gram of protein Dang, these coconut chips are good (I’m so sorry). Dang toasts whole fresh Thai coconuts until crispy and flavors them with either salt, caramel and sea salt, or chocolate and sea salt. There’s also the original flavor which is unbeatable in its delicious simplicity. All I know is that if your Thai mom’s recipe is the inspiration behind your snack—like Dang’s is—it’s bound to be good. I'd dip this in scoops of peanut butter, top it on keto-friendly ice cream, or add the salted version to a salad for an element of crunch.

David Sunflower Seeds For ranch flavor

190 calories, 16 grams of fat, 5 grams of carbs, 7 grams of protein Ah, these take me back to my softball days. I never really nailed down the whole “crack-the-shells-in-your-mouth-and-eat-the-seed” bit but went through a bag of these every game regardless. Sunflower seeds are high in the good fat that fuels you during a keto diet and they’re also fun to eat. Get the ranch flavor and enjoy that creamy dusting that envelops the entire bag.

Moon Cheese For cheddar

170 calories, 14 grams of fat, 2 gram of carbs, 11 grams of protein They’re crispy and they’re 100% little balls of cheese; what is not to love? Moon Cheese comes in a variety of flavors: gouda, cheddar, white cheddar with black pepper, pepper jack, cheddar bacon, and garlic parmesan—for gluten free, low-carb snacking. They're not quite as crispy as the Whisps. Instead, they're a bit squeakier; the texture is crunchy with a bit of bounce. Moon Cheese would be perfect in a bowl of tomato soup.

Justin’s Nut Butter For classic almond butter

190 calories, 18 grams of fat, 6 grams of carbs, 7 grams of protein Is it acceptable to just eat a scoop of nut butter as a snack? On the keto diet, yes. Justin’s Nut Butter makes it easy with their prepackaged portions, crafted with all your beloved nuts like peanuts, almonds, and cashews. Squeeze your choice favorite on to a celery stick for the best throwback snack, top apple slices with almond butter and a sprinkling of cinnamon for a dessert-like treat, or just directly spoon the nut butter directly into your mouth because sometimes that's the ideal snack. Utz Pork Rinds 80 calories, 5 grams of fat, 0 grams of carbs, 8 grams of protein I don’t miss potato chips or tortilla chips if I have a jug of pork rinds in front of me. Utz makes them just right: lightly salted with an audible crunch. Dip them in nacho cheese, salsa, and guacamole, or crumble them over your salad; you’ll never miss those spud-heavy chips again.

Slim Jims 116 calories, 7.3 grams of fat, 3.1 grams of carbs, 9.1 grams of protein Slim Jims are the ultimate road-trip-gas-station-convenience-store snack and it’s a blessing that these bad boys also happen to be keto-friendly. The signature pepperiness is so appetizing and I'm still trying to understand how a dried meat stick can be so juicy and oily. They’re high in protein and fat, but also sodium, so don’t go too crazy snapping into these meat sticks.

Highkey Mini Cookies For the chocolate chip flavor

140 calories, 14 grams of fat, 10 grams of carbs, 4 grams of proteins Okay, yes, these mini cookies do have some carbs—but not nearly as much as a typical chocolate chip cookie would. Highkey's line of products are intended for people participating in a keto diet and thus have high fat contents, but also fiber. The flavor, shockingly, can rival your favorite packaged chocolate chip cookies from your childhood and even has that signature crispiness. If you're having a craving for cookies, reach for Highkey instead.

Magic Spoon Cereal For the frosted flavor

140 calories, 7 grams of fat, 14 grams of carbs, 13 grams of protein You would think that if you're doing keto, cereal as a breakfast or snacking option is out the door. That's not the case though. Magic Spoon specializes in low-carb, high-protein cereal in all your favorite, classic flavors. There's frosted, fruity, peanut butter, cocoa, and more—all emulating the colorful and sugary boxes you grew up with, without all the excess. Will it taste exactly like your childhood favorite? No. It's derived from pea protein, after all. But it's pretty incredible how close it will be to fulfilling that cereal craving while still being nourishing and keto-friendly. Want more Thrillist?
