What is the fruit of faith?

Jesus is using a growing analogy to help us think about our faith and in particular, how we are living our faith and letting it show in our lives. The picture Jesus uses in this verse ties into what are often called “fruits of faith”. In other words, what fruit or evidence is your faith displaying in your life?

Fruits of faith

Matthew 7:20 “By their fruit you will recognize them.”

If you are a gardener, you are likely starting to see and enjoy some of the fruits of your labors. Our family has been blessed to be enjoying radishes from our garden for the last several weeks and as other plants mature we are looking forward to enjoying more home-grown produce. Have you ever had it happen where you wonder if it is the seeds you planted or weeds growing in your garden? Especially when the seeds just start sprouting it is sometimes hard to distinguish between what you planted and what shouldn’t be growing there. With that thought in mind, go back and reread our verse for this week. Jesus is using a growing analogy to help us think about our faith and in particular, how we are living our faith and letting it show in our lives. The picture Jesus uses in this verse ties into what are often called “fruits of faith”. In other words, what fruit or evidence is your faith displaying in your life? Galatians 5:22-23 is one of those portions of the Bible which very clearly lays out what is meant by fruits of faith. Read that section of the Bible and ask yourself if your faith demonstrates such fruit. Particularly ask yourself how often your faith and life displays fruit like that or if the fruit which people see and hear in your life is something strikingly different. I will not deny that it is a real struggle to demonstrate such fruits of faith all the time. Some people try to reason that they are not as bad as other people and that is good enough.

I ask you to think of it this way: as people watch you and listen to you – it doesn’t matter if it’s at work, at home, out in public or enjoying some leisure time – do they see and hear something different or do you blend right in with the selfish, ungodly, vulgar words and behavior of everyone else?

Some people try to argue that there are some times in their lives that their time is their own time and they can do whatever they want. Ask yourself if such an attitude or behavior is God-pleasing. Consider our weekly verse from back in early February which reminded us that “you are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14a).

Think about this whole subject from another perspective. If you want to have good “fruit” from your garden, there are certain things you have to do. You have to fertilize and water and make sure that only the plants you want growing are growing.

So, if you are struggling or having a hard time letting such fruits of faith be shown in your life, ask yourself what you are doing to nourish your faith. Are you letting your faith just exist on its own like some people let their garden go to wild? Or do you nourish your faith with these devotions, worship and reading the Bible on your own?

There is one Bible verse which wraps this all together very nicely. In John 15:8 Jesus tells us “This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.”. That is a fantastic reminder that when it comes to our faith life, it is never us doing something for God to help him out. He has helped us out more than we can ever ask or imagine and all he asks in return is that we live our lives in a way which gives him glory and lets him shine through in our words and actions.
