They may feel as though there is nothing more they can do to cure their pain. However, a pain-free life is sometimes as simple as adjusting your diet. NASA Bone & Joint Specialists understands that it can be overwhelming to figure out a diet that is joint-friendly, so we’ve listed out some of the top foods to avoid if you’re suffering from joint pain:

01. Eggs

Consuming eggs regularly can lead to an increased amount of swelling and joint pain. The yolks contain arachidonic acid, which helps trigger inflammation in the body. Eggs also contain saturated fat which can also induce joint pain. If you can’t give up eggs completely, pass on the yolks and simply use the egg whites instead.

02. Dairy

Dairy contains a high level of protein casein. This type of protein triggers inflammation and pain in the joints, and may even contribute to irritation around the joints. Some dairy products, such as butter, contain a high amount of saturated fat. This can also contribute to inflammation and joint pain. Soy milk and almond milk are some good substitutions for dairy products.

03. Processed Meats

Processed meats contain nitrites and purines. These chemicals increase inflammation and lead to joint pain. Meats such as hot dogs, corned beef, bacon, and sausages are all processed and should be avoided. Reach for lean, fresh cuts of meat instead.

04. Sugar

Sugar triggers the release of cytokines, which are inflammatory agents that can lead to joint pain. Sugar can also easily lead to weight gain. An increase in weight adds extra pressure on the joints and leads to joint pain. Avoid sugary foods such as candy, pastries, and pre-sweetened cereal.

05. Fried Foods

Fried foods are high in saturated fat and low in omega-3 fatty acids. This combination induces inflammation within the whole body and makes joint pain worse. Pass up the fried chicken and try eating it grilled or baked instead. You’ll get delicious flavor without irritating your joint pain.

06. Refined Grains

When grains are processed and refined, they lose most of their fiber, minerals, vitamins, and fatty acids. Refining grains depletes them of almost all the inflammation-reducing nutrients, which leads to joint pain. Most people who are into intermittent fasting have heard of autophagy and its health benefits. In fact, many people with health issues start with intermittent fasting because they want to improve their health with the help of autophagy. Autophagy seems to increase with fasting length, but it’s hard to say when autophagy starts. It varies for each individual and depends on many factors such as age, fitness, underlying health conditions, and lifestyle. However, research suggests that 18 hours of fasting can profoundly stimulate this vital process in some people (1).

Because the exact timing of autophagy is uncertain, many people are looking for the signs of autophagy. So how do you know if this process has started already?

What is autophagy?

Autophagy is a greek term meaning self-eating. While this doesn’t sound healthy but rather counter-productive, it is an essential mechanism that is vital for our health. Autophagy is a recycling mechanism that is stimulated by fasting. When no fresh nutrients are coming in, cells have to recycle old molecules. When you eat regularly with only small breaks in between, autophagy runs at low levels (2). You can compare autophagy to spring cleaning–it allows cells the opportunity to get rid of old molecules that are not needed anymore and that are in the way. However, as long as fresh molecules are continually coming in, the cell sees no need to recycle old ones.
