But according to a Gallup poll taken in September 2019, nearly one in four Americans said they had decreased their meat consumption. Nine in ten people named health concerns as the reason they ate less meat. (Other factors were environmental concerns and food safety.) During the coronavirus pandemic, we also ate less meat as companies had to halt or slow production for safety concerns. Also, as we all stayed home and cooked more of our own meals from scratch, plant-based meat substitute sales skyrocketed.
