Why does a wet paper towel help when cutting onions?

what? Yep, apparently this works by the paper towel absorbing the chemical, called syn-Propathanethial S-oxide, that normally brings you to tears when it rises from the onion into your nose and eyes, causing irritation.

This very simple hack could stop you from crying when chopping onions

We’ve tried all the hacks to stop us from crying when chopping onions, haven’t we? Using a super sharp knife, wearing goggles, holding a wooden spoon between our teeth, and so on. Well, now there is another hack being suggested on social media, and it’s surely the simplest of all. An Australian woman by the name of Shilo has shared her tip on Facebook to stop us from blubbing as we take a knife to an onion. And it’s so straightforward that it seems too good to be true. As reported by the Daily Mail, she just puts a piece of wet towel next to the onion when she chops it.

Wait… what?

Yep, apparently this works by the paper towel absorbing the chemical, called syn-Propathanethial S-oxide, that normally brings you to tears when it rises from the onion into your nose and eyes, causing irritation. Facebook user Shilo wrote: “Bet you didn't know this. The reason why you cry when you chop onions is that the chemical in the onion is attracted to the nearest source of water, which is usually the eyes.”

She added: “Now this is a tip you can use!”

One person wrote: “YES! Can confirm this helped soooo much.”

Other social media users have been trying out the hack as well, and seemingly finding success with it. When US rapper Doja Cat recently posted a picture of herself on Twitter wearing goggles while chopping an onion, someone replied: “Girl let me help you. Wet some paper towel and keep it on the cutting board. The acidity from onions gravitate towards water. So instead of hitting your tear ducts it'll seep towards the wet paper towel instead.” Someone else suggested: “Also tossing the onion in the freezer for a few minutes before cutting will help even more!”

We’re definitely going to give this a go!
